You are not a snowflake; you are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile.
Chuck Palahniuk
There are two different kind of actors during the degradation of the organic waste. The first ones are the detritivores such as bugs, beetles, mites and of course me and my species, the earthworms! We eat just about anything and in the process, we break up the materials to expose many more surfaces to the smaller microorganisms which are the second kind of degradation actors. Those microorganisms are the decomposers: the bacteria, the molds and the fungi.
By adding organic materials to the soil, you improve the structure of the soil (better aeration and moisture retention) and feed the beneficial organisms in the ground (we are more encouraging, me and my composting compatriots to live at your place!)
To assure a good degradation and to have a good quality of compost, you need to take care at the ratio Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) which has to be 30:1.
Indeed, we need to have a balance between those two elements, for us, the earthworms but also for all the decomposers which are more sensitive at the close environment.
Carbon: rough, dry and brown waste like the branches, the dry leaves, the paper, the cardboards...
The carbohydrate chains (glucose, cellulose,...) give the energy to the decomposers and are transformed in heat and carbon dioxide.
But the decomposers need nitrogened materials to grow and some moisture. That’s why they need some green waste, full of azote!
Nitrogen: Green, soft and moist waste like fruits and vegetables scraps, green grass...
It’s easy to digest by the microorganisms, they find a lot of sugars and proteins which help to develop and reproduce. The green waste has no structure so the air has some difficulties to circulate through the compost pile and the excess water stay inside.
They need to be mixed with the Carbon waste.
